woodcuts
what is a woodcut?
A woodcut is a block print, done by carving the design into wood (a different piece of board for each color), and inking the
wood to print onto paper. All printing is done by hand (using a wooden
spoon to rub the back of the paper, transferring the ink from the wood onto the
paper).
Each woodblock print is an original piece of art -— not
a reproduction. Each was hand printed by the artist from her carved blocks of
maple or birch. A Different piece of wood is carved for each color. The ink is
professional oil base, printed on handmade acid-free Japanese paper (usually
Hosho or Kitakata). Each woodcut edition takes
from three weeks to four months to complete.
what is a woodcut reproduction?
The original print is made directly from the
artist's wood blocks, etching plates or lithography stones. A reproduction
is made by photographic or mechanical means -- offset, photocopied,
computer-printed, and such. My editions of original woodblock prints are
sold out, but I can sell reproductions, which are not nearly as expensive or
valuable.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
