The sheepherders of Wyoming, often of Basque heritage, still use this
horse-drawn version of the motor home. Alert visitors driving along the highways
can often see a sheepherder’s wagon in the distance, as it rumbles across the
prairie along with the bleating flock, or perches atop a knoll to catch the
breeze, abandoned while the shepherd rides herd with the dogs. The sheep roam
vast stretches of sagebrush steppe, and in high summer climb the mountain slopes
to forage in the rich grassy meadows.

Western artist Dawn Senior-Trask has often listened to the tales of the
sheepherder, who when encountered on a rare trip to town, makes up for months of
loneliness by talking nonstop for hours to anyone he can find. A captive
audience is great -- a bus station’s perfect, but if the town lacks that, a bar,
café, even the post office will do. The old sheepherder tells of his nights
spent rifle in hand, ready for the coyote pack or the mountain lion. He squints
his distrust of the eagle, but the rattlesnake he does not fear. “You leave them
alone, they’ll leave you alone.” He moves from sheep ranch to sheep ranch
through Wyoming, Utah, Nevada looking for work, and when he finds it he earns
little, no benefits, no Social Security.
Dawn based this bronze plaque on sketches she made of sheep wagons, and an old
photograph which surprised her because the shepherd pictured was a young woman.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
