As a teenager, artist Dawn Senior-Trask ventured out in a Wyoming spring
snowstorm, when wet heavy flakes piled more than two feet deep upon the land,
and weighed down the leafing cottonwood branches. In the shelter of a cliff,
Dawn was astonished to find a huge moth with feathery antennae and
richly-patterned wings, hanging upside-down among the tiny trumpet-shaped
blossoms of a wild currant shrub. Dawn hoped the moth had the ability, as
hummingbirds do, to go dormant and thus survive the storm.

She took the opportunity to sketch the wondrous creature and, ever since, its
image has appeared often in all media of her art. She is also especially fond of
the round, intricately-edged leaves of the currant, a hardy shrub which
sometimes grows high on a granite boulder, having taken root in a minute crack
and thriving there.
