More information about this animal sculpture bronze plaque below.
This bronze plaque is not a plaque -- it’s actually a small animal
sculpture-in-the-round. It portrays, slightly larger than life-size, the
Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus gracious) that scampers across the rocks and lives
in the crevices of boulders. It loves the light of the open ground where
scattered, low sagebrush grow. Dawn has spent many a fascinated hour watching
the lizards hunt for insects, spiders, mites, ticks -- even scorpions! As a
child she couldn’t always resist the temptation to tease a lizard by tossing
tiny pebbles near it. Mistaking the movement of the pebble for potential prey,
the lizard would make a dash for it.

Even more amusing is to watch two lizards fight over territory. Atop a boulder
they make their stand. They bob up and down, staring at each other, then grapple
and with heroic struggles wrestle so ferociously that they remind the awestruck
observer of two huge dinosaurs battling for their lives. At last one of the
reptilian gladiators will get a strong grip on his opponent and with a supreme
heave toss him bodily off of the boulder! Luckily, the vanquished is usually not
hurt, so agile and light-footed is he, but he must retreat to find another rock,
bush or log to call home.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
