In the first weeks of June the artist rises at daybreak to walk the rocky hills
in search of the large, white blossoms of the stemless primrose, which have
opened during the night. She kneels, crouching low to the ground-hugging plants
to breathe deep the sweet fragrance of their heart-shaped petals. Among the
cluster of pointy leaves nestle older blossoms, turning pink with age. The
irresistible nectar of the primrose beckons heavy-bodied sphinx moths, which
hover and dart on rapid wings from flower to flower, like hummingbirds of the
night.

Sometimes Dawn finds, hidden in the foliage, a type of true bug whose back is
marked by a tiny white heart, as if to echo the primrose petals. As a youngster
she dubbed this creature “The Love Bug”.
The primrose is especially abundant on the steep, rocky wall of the draw near
Dawn's cabin. Here it blooms among the previous autumn’s remnants of grama
grass, whose panicles, from which the seeds have long since dropped, have dried
into a beautiful spiral design.
