The smallest of all the plaques -- the size of a postage stamp -- this bronze
could be worn as a piece of fine jewelry!
As a girl, Dawn dubbed the cinquefoil “Hearts and Stars.” She thought the yellow
petals resembled hearts, with the gap between them outlining the underlying
sepals in the shape of spring-green, five-pointed stars. She loves to sit beside
a rushing mountain creek among great bunches of cinquefoil which overhang the
banks.

Of the 30 species of Potentilla found in the Rocky Mountains, the Slender
Cinquefoil (Potentilla gracilis) is one of the most widespread in the
steppelands. They grow in the moist soil of meadows and open woods, and along
streams from low valleys to around 8,000 feet. Potentillas are related to
strawberries, and in some species the leaves look enough like strawberry leaves
to be confused.
Some potentillas contain tannic acid and have been used medicinally as
astringents. Deer, elk and other wild animals eat them, and since they withstand
heavy grazing and trampling, their abundance or scarcity is often used to gauge
range conditions.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
