More information about this animal sculpture bronze plaque below.
Seventeen species of sagebrush grow in Wyoming, from the lowlands to the alpine
zone above tree line. Wildlife artist Dawn Senior-Trask grew up loving the
fresh, spicy scent of sagebrush after rain, and the bluish-green tinge it gives
to the open landscape. She has observed how vital this shrub is to the west and
its inhabitants. Though considered poor livestock food, sagebrush is essential
browse for deer, elk and pronghorn antelope during the winter, and provides
habitat for sage grouse, towhees, thrashers, native sparrows, horned larks, and
other birds.
Sagebrush catches blowing sand, forming coppice dunes, which in turn catch the
drifting snow, creating islands of good moisture conditions that support rabbit
brush, grasses, wildflowers, and the burrows of small creatures such as the
Least Chipmunk.

The quick, playful chipmunks have delighted Dawn since childhood when her
whistle would bring her striped neighbors to her hand for the seeds she offered.
She recognized and named dozens of individuals ¾ as distinct from one another as
her human playmates ¾ over generations, and even knew some of their family
trees. One granny chipmunk, Blacky, lived to the ripe old age of eight.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
