More information about this animal sculpture bronze plaque below.
Black-capped and Mountain chickadees abound in the mountains and foothills where
Dawn grew up. Most of the charming little gray, white and black birds live
higher in the mountains in summer, and migrate down to the sheltered draws of
the foothills in winter, Here they find insects among the crevices of the
cottonwood bark, and eat the berries and seeds of the junipers and cedars.
Dozens of chickadees became so familiar with Dawn that when she hiked through
the snow they followed her, fluttering around her and landing on her head,
shoulders and hands looking for the sunflower seeds she always carried in her
coat pockets for them.

One pair of Mountain chickadees she found especially endearing, and since a
professor from Beijing University had recently visited her family and taught her
some Chinese, she named the tiny birds Didi and Jeijei (meaning Little Brother
and Sister).
This pair stayed to nest in the draw near Dawn’s cabin, enabling her to watch
their courtship displays, in which Jeijei acted like a helpless nestling,
fluttering her wings and begging, and Didi proved himself as a provider by
feeding her seeds and insects. Much to Dawn’s delight, the pair successfully
raised a brood of youngsters, the next generation of her closest friends.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
