Dawn Senior-Trask, of Moonhorse Art Studio, has worked in a wide variety of media including charcoal, oil paintings, woodcuts, gouaches, claybords and scratchboards. Her artwork, especially her claybords and scratchboards, are a unique way of looking at the memories and culture of the West -- memories and reflections of the lifestyles this western artist has experienced during the many years she has lived in a log cabin near Saratoga, Wyoming.

what is a claybord?

Claybord is a type of scratchboard that has a black-inked surface and a thick, white clay coating on a rigid hardboard backing. With sharp nibs, wire brushes, steel wool and other tools, Dawn scratches through the black ink to create white lines and areas. Usually she applies color (pastels or watercolor) to some of the white (scratched) areas.

Dawn and her husband have seven horses, but theirs is a small remuda compared to their ranch neighbors, whose dozens of mares and colts roam the sagebrush hills in a semi-wild state for much of the year.
