These pieces started with the pitcher covered with bas-relief flowers,
butterflies, and insects, which Dawn made for her sister's birthday. This
wildlife sculpture in bronze has proved so beloved by the public that she has
added more pieces over the years, each depicting in exquisite detail the wild
plants and tiny creatures she observes and sketches around her cabin every
summer.
What child of the west has not been fascinated by the Horned Lizard: so spiky
and fierce-looking, you just have to hold it in your hand! But if you frighten
it unduly, it will squirt blood from its “eyes” (actually a gland near those
orbs) and scare you! Here the delightful, tiny dragon nestles among the leaves
and yellow blossoms of an equally thorny and rare plant, the Buffalo Burr.
This wildlife sculpture in bronze also features among its reliefs the signature
plant of Wyoming, the Sagebrush, with its three-lobed leaves and sprays of tiny
seeds. Over a dozen species of this shrub thrive in the state, and it provides
essential forage and cover for many wild creatures, including sage grouse,
pronghorn, mule deer, elk, and countless others. Nothing evokes more nostalgia
in a person from the West than the scent of sagebrush after rain.

The Cheatgrass, being an invasive species, is seldom spoken of with admiration,
especially since its sharp seeds jab irritatingly into the garments of the
passing hiker, leading to terms of less than endearment floating around on the
Wyoming breeze. The grass is useless as forage for livestock or big game -- only
a few chipmunks and voles seem to get any benefit from it at all. But in early
summer when it turns purplish-red and glows, rippling, in the sunset, it is
splendid in its beauty.
Among the cliffs on the draw’s wall, the purple Penstemon grows in profusion,
and the steep, gravelly soil is held in place by Pussytoes, with its white,
fluffy, paw-like flower and its grayish-green leaves covered with fine white
hairs. The Thread-waisted wasp hunts for caterpillars in the draw, and takes
great care digging a burrow for its eggs, stocking it with prey, and covering
the burrow, carefully packing it with tiny pieces of gravel, and kicking a fine
spray of sand on top to completely disguise its presence.
The Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly holds a special memory for wildlife
artist Dawn Senior-Trask. As a teenager she rode her family’s old cowhorse,
Reverend, up the draw one lazy summer day, and to her delight a pair of
swallowtails flitted around her and the horse all the way to the meadow. Here
Dawn dismounted to let Reverend graze, and the strikingly-marked
yellow-and-black butterflies fluttered here and there all the while. To Dawn’s
amazement, when she remounted and headed back downstream, the swallowtails
accompanied her and Reverend all the way home.
No doubt Dawn could tell a story about each of the other plants featured on this
wildlife sculpture in bronze, which include the Daisy, Moss Phlox, Silverweed,
Wild Buckwheat, and several flowers so tiny she has never been able to find them
in any field guides.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
