Visiting Artist Spreads Creative Perspective to Spearfish Students
By Kris Garlick-Beaty, The Black Hills Pioneer, Spearfish, SD
Visiting artist Dawn Senior-Trask of Saratoga, Wyoming, recently instructed
Spearfish art students on how to create relief sculptures.
For the special project, high school and middle school artists created tiles
sculpted in clay, which are to be "bronzed" and assembled into a quilt pattern.
The designs are of animals, flowers and nature.
The idea directly links to Senior's artistic background.
The professional artist works with clay sculptures cast in bronze. In
working with students, she often pulls out themes that parallel the natural,
wild animals, plants and dramatic landscape themes found in her own art and
writings.
In addition to sculpting, Senior enjoys paining with oils, drawing, and writing
poetry, novels and essays. Her fiction, and non-fiction essays, are about
her own experiences.
While at Spearfish High School and Middle School, Senior will also work with
creative writing classes.
She and husband, Juel Trask, a pianist, live in a log cabin near Saratoga,
Wyoming, the same home that she grew up in. She tends to their seven
horses when she's not traveling as an artist in residence through the South
Dakota Arts Council.

"I don't like Dawn's
drawings, I worship them and feel great pride and much humility
that my poems struck such searing fire in her creative woodlands. I can
say only 'Bless her!', for sharing in my dreams, and working them into
reality." - Poet Virginia Love Long, author of the book Squaw Winter
